Spiritual Warfare 101

Spiritual Warfare 101

This is a excerpt from my next book on Spiritual Warfare:

Revelation tells us that the kingdom of this world is becoming the kingdom of God. There is currently a battle between two kingdoms; the kingdom of darkness in the kingdom of glorious light.

In the beginning, God created the earth and he handed authority over to humanity. God commissioned us to manage this world on his behalf. But, we kind of messed that up and as a result Satan usurped our authority and established his own kingdom.

Satan’s kingdom is known as the kingdom of darkness but it is also a kingdom of destruction. It saddens me to no end at the extent of destruction that Satan’s kingdom has in people’s lives. I’m a pastor and a director of a School of Ministry and for the last decade, I’ve helped thousands of people recover from the destruction the enemy has wrought in their lives. It’s a never ending line of brokenness and defeat. The destruction of the kingdom of darkness has left no one untouched.

Just looking at Genesis  chapter 3 you can see the results of the fall… of entering into Satan’s kingdom: shame, guilt, self-justification, blame shifting, and a host of other things.

But, the good news is that Satan’s kingdom is coming to an end. Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of lords, has ushered in a new kingdom, God’s kingdom. It’s a kingdom of light, love, and restoration. God’s objective is to destroy the destroyer, heal the brokenness of his children, and restore their souls.

The most incredible part of God’s plan is that he has enlisted you and me to bring his kingdom to bear in this world.  It’s not that he needs us, he doesn’t. God has enlisted us as an invitation for us to come to know him and experiencing deeper as we work alongside him, helping  advance his kingdom. It’s pretty incredible when you think about.

The objective when kingdoms fight, whether it’s kingdoms here on earth for the spiritual kingdoms of darkness and light, is to take ground. The kingdom that takes the most ground wins; it grows as the other shrinks into oblivion.  The concept of taking ground is the heart of spiritual warfare.

The question is, “What is the ‘ground’ that is being fought for?”

I’m so glad you asked. Let’s look at wars between earthly kingdoms. They are fought over valuable resources: water, land, oil, gold, etc. The spiritual kingdoms are fighting over valuable resources too. The question is, “What does God consider to be the most valuable resource on earth?” The answer… the human soul. Jesus said that there is nothing more valuable than the soul.

The ground that is being fought for are souls. Satan is trying to extend his kingdom of darkness and destruction into every facet of people’s lives and he is trying to keep them broken and bound—permanently serving his kingdom. Now, I want you to realize that just because a person gets saved doesn’t mean they are freed from the influences of Satan’s kingdom.

Have you ever seen a dog that’s been rescued from an abusive home? It’s really sad. No matter how long the dog lives in the new master’s home it will always cower when someone tries to pet it. It doesn’t matter how much love the new owner gives the dog, fear of being beaten has been so deeply ingrained in the dog that it will instinctively tuck it’s tail between its legs, start to shake with fear, and cower on the ground.

In the same way, even when believers have been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light, you can still hold onto learned behaviors and coping mechanisms from your former master and no matter how much love God lavishes you with, you can still react as if you’re still living in the kingdom of darkness. It’s sad.

Why do I bring this up? Because when I talk about the kingdoms fighting over souls I’m not just talking about salvation. Yes, that’s a huge part of it… that’s the first, most important step but, if the enemy loses that fight he will try to keep you so wrapped up in your issues that you are useless in advancing God’s kingdom.

Now, getting back to what God has enlisted you to do, which is taking ground from the enemy. That means you have been called to take back territory that the enemy once occupied in people’s hearts and minds letting God’s kingdom flood into their lives renewing and restoring them. For the unsaved, that means they get saved. For those that are already saved that means they get freedom and healing in every area of their lives.

Spiritual warfare isn’t so much about demons giving you bad dreams but about freeing people from the lies and destruction caused by the kingdom of darkness.
